In a remarkable display of maritime solidarity, renowned Finnish solo rower Jari Saario has publicly expressed his profound gratitude to 19 Filipino seafarers who executed a daring rescue operation during his voyage across the treacherous South Atlantic Ocean in January 2026. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that Saario personally thanked the Filipino crew members of the Greek merchant vessel Cymona Eagle during a formal courtesy visit to Ambassador Domingo Nolasco in Finland.
A Perilous Journey Interrupted
Jari Saario was attempting to achieve a historic feat by becoming the first solo rower to cross the South Atlantic Ocean from Cape Horn to Cape Town, covering an arduous distance of approximately 8,000 kilometers. However, his ambitious expedition took a dangerous turn when a severe storm unexpectedly overturned his vessel, leaving him stranded in a waterlogged boat for a harrowing 36 hours. During this critical period, Saario faced life-threatening conditions including hypothermia and extreme maritime dangers, with survival hanging in the balance.
The Heroic Rescue Operation
Despite facing formidable 7-meter waves and powerful winds, the Cymona Eagle, a Greek merchant vessel manned entirely by Filipino seafarers, successfully located and rescued Saario from his precarious situation. The DMW highlighted that Saario spent seven days aboard the ship recovering from his ordeal, during which the Filipino crew demonstrated exceptional care, friendliness, and hospitality. In a touching gesture, the seafarers even organized a special thanksgiving party for Saario before he disembarked safely in Cape Town.
Official Recognition and Praise
The Department of Migrant Workers issued a formal statement commending the Filipino seafarers for their outstanding professionalism and unwavering willingness to assist during a crisis. "We commend the Filipino seafarers for enhancing the image of Filipinos worldwide by demonstrating their professionalism and willingness to help during times of crisis and adversity," the DMW declared. This incident underscores the vital role that Filipino maritime professionals play in global shipping and emergency response scenarios.
Saario's Heartfelt Appreciation
During his meeting with Ambassador Nolasco, Saario expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Filipino seafarers who not only saved his life but also provided compassionate support throughout his recovery. "He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Filipino seafarers with whom he stayed seven days aboard the ship," the DMW reported, noting that Saario specifically praised the crew for their caring nature and exceptional hospitality. This rescue story serves as a powerful testament to international cooperation and human kindness on the high seas.
