Middle East Conflict Leaves Over 100 OFWs Stranded in Philippines
Amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East, more than 100 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been left stranded in the Philippines following the cancellation of their flights to the region. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has stepped in to provide immediate assistance, while assuring that no OFWs in the conflict zone have been harmed so far.
Flight Cancellations and Immediate Assistance
In a recent social media update, DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac revealed that approximately 106 OFWs, whose flights to the Middle East were canceled, have received accommodation and transport support from the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa). "About 106 OFWs from canceled Middle East flights were provided with accommodation and transport assistance by DMW-Owwa," Cacdac stated, highlighting the government's proactive response to the crisis.
The cancellations come as a direct result of heightened hostilities, including ballistic missile attacks. For instance, on March 1, 2026, a missile fired from Iran struck Tel Aviv, Israel, causing significant damage and underscoring the volatile situation. This incident is part of a broader escalation that began with US and Israeli strikes against Iran, followed by Iranian retaliatory missile barrages targeting Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
No OFWs Affected in Conflict Zone, DMW Reports
Despite the dangerous developments, the DMW has confirmed that there are no reports of OFWs being adversely affected by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. In a radio interview, Secretary Cacdac emphasized, "Right now, we have extensive coordination in terms of our relations with our embassies all across the region, Israel and the Gulf states. Thus far, there have been no reports of OFWs being hurt or adversely affected by these attacks that we are seeing."
This assurance is backed by continuous monitoring and coordination efforts with Philippine embassies and Migrant Workers Offices throughout the affected areas. The DMW remains vigilant, leveraging these networks to ensure the safety and well-being of Filipino workers abroad.
Safety Advisories and Support Services
In light of the ongoing conflict, DMW chief Cacdac has issued advisories to OFWs in the Middle East, urging them to remain calm and vigilant. "Stay cautious, alert, and avoid areas with potential danger," he advised, stressing the importance of personal safety during these uncertain times.
Owwa has also reaffirmed its readiness to provide all necessary assistance to OFWs in the region. In a social media post, Owwa declared, "Owwa continues to coordinate with Migrant Workers Offices and Philippine [embassies] to ensure the safety of our countrymen." The agency has made its hotline, 1348, available 24/7 for those in need of help. Additionally, OFWs can visit the nearest Owwa Regional Office or use the Kumusta Kabayan app for immediate support and action.
Background on the Escalating Conflict
The current crisis stems from a series of military actions that have intensified regional tensions. On Saturday, US and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran, prompting a swift retaliation from Iran. The retaliatory measures included missile attacks on Israel and several Gulf states, such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. These events have not only disrupted travel and daily life but also raised global concerns about further escalation and its impact on international workers, including the significant OFW community in the Middle East.
As the situation evolves, the DMW and Owwa continue to monitor developments closely, ensuring that Filipino workers receive the support and protection they need during this challenging period.
