Negros Occidental and Bacolod City Launch OFW Support Services Amid Middle East Tensions
In response to escalating military conflicts in the Middle East, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, in collaboration with Bacolod City, has officially activated an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Help Desk and dedicated hotlines. This initiative aims to provide critical assistance to Negrenses and Bacolodnons whose family members, friends, or loved ones are OFWs residing in affected regions.
Coordinated Efforts with National Agencies
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson emphasized the provincial government's commitment to delivering timely information and support through close coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa).
"If you know a Negrense OFW in an affected area, or if you are a family member seeking verified updates and assistance, please call 0998 956 9037 or 0924 109 7705," Governor Lacson stated, urging the community to utilize these resources for reliable guidance.
Bacolod City's Dedicated Response
Mayor Greg Gasataya announced that Bacolod City has established its own hotline and help desk to assist residents with relatives impacted by recent military events. The city government is working in tandem with the DMW to ensure comprehensive support.
"In coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers, we are committed to providing guidance, support, and any necessary assistance to ensure the well-being of our fellow Bacolodnons during this difficult time," Mayor Gasataya affirmed.
He provided specific contact details for assistance: "If your family is in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to call us at 0930 877 5097, or approach help desks at the Bacolod City Government Center lobby available on March 2, 2026."
Safety Updates and Repatriation Coordination
Mayor Gasataya reported that initial assessments indicate Bacolodnons in the Middle East are currently safe. However, the city government is proactively coordinating with the DMW and the Department of Foreign Affairs to facilitate repatriation for those who wish to return home.
The mayor strongly encouraged affected individuals to reach out for assistance, reinforcing the availability of these emergency services.
Background on the Conflict
The activation of these support services follows heightened tensions that erupted on March 1, 2026, triggered by coordinated military strikes involving the United States and Israel on Iran. This geopolitical instability has raised concerns for OFWs and their families, prompting local governments to implement responsive measures.
