OWWA-7 Implements Emergency Protocols Amid Middle East Tensions
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Region 7 (OWWA-7), in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers-7, has officially activated its regional emergency response protocols. This decisive action follows the escalating tensions in the Middle East, prompting preparations for the potential repatriation of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Standby Operations at Mactan-Cebu International Airport
To ensure the orderly arrival and reintegration of OFWs from Central Visayas, OWWA-7 has deployed personnel on a 24/7 standby basis at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA). This proactive measure aims to provide immediate assistance and logistical support for any returning workers affected by the regional instability.
As of the latest agency report on March 2, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities, injuries, or urgent assistance requests from OFWs in the region. However, the administration continues to coordinate closely with Migrant Workers Offices across various Middle Eastern countries to receive real-time updates on the situation.
Nearly 34,000 OFWs from Central Visayas in Affected Areas
Official estimates indicate that approximately 33,903 registered OFWs from Region 7 are currently located in the affected areas of the Middle East. This significant number underscores the urgency of the emergency preparations and the potential scale of any required repatriation efforts.
Direct Appeals to Stranded and Affected OFWs
Overseas Workers Welfare Officer II Christina Marie Vistal has issued a direct appeal to OFWs who may be stranded in Cebu. She urges them to immediately approach OWWA personnel for any necessary assistance. "We have dedicated staff ready at the OWWA counter in the International Departure Terminal of MCIA," Vistal stated, encouraging affected workers to seek help there if needed.
Furthermore, all Overseas Filipino Workers in the Middle East are strongly advised to adhere to the advisories issued by the Philippine Embassy and local authorities regarding the prevailing security situation. This guidance is crucial for their safety and to facilitate coordinated response efforts.
