Officials of Danao City presented their innovative "smart" commercial center program during the Danao City Investment Forum on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The event, held at the Provincial Capitol, marked a significant transition for the city from an industrial hub to a modern, technology-driven commercial center.
Major Infrastructure Investment
Mayor Ramon "Nito" D. Durano III, leading the forum under the theme "Moving Forward," announced the approval of a substantial P160-million expansion of the city's waterworks system. This critical infrastructure project is designed to support the growing industries and facilitate the city's evolution into a smart commercial hub.
Three Development Pillars for 2026
City Planning and Development Officer Ramon Gorre outlined Danao City's vision for 2026, which is built on three core development pillars: Resiliency, Digitalization, and Sustainability. Each pillar encompasses specific initiatives aimed at transforming the city's landscape and governance.
Resiliency and Infrastructure
The resiliency program prioritizes disaster-resilient infrastructure, with a key focus on rehabilitating "Depensa," the city's flood mitigation structure. This facility, operational for decades, was damaged by Typhoon Tino on November 4, 2025. Construction on the flood mitigation structure in Barangay Poblacion and Tuburan Sur will commence this year, funded by P13 million from the city's development fund.
Additionally, the city is shifting its strategy toward bridge and connectivity projects to reduce the need for repetitive repairs on critical disaster risk reduction structures. This infrastructure push is intended to support commercial expansion and empower investment opportunities.
Digitalization Efforts
To modernize governance, the "Digitalize Danao" program will implement a comprehensive smart city roadmap. This initiative includes installing 56 free Wi-Fi access points across 26 of the city's 42 barangays, supported by nine multi-access towers. The city is also enhancing e-governance through a partnership with GCash and introducing new online feedback mechanisms to improve public services.
Sustainability Initiatives
Highlighting its commitment to a zero-carbon future, Danao City revealed it is the only local government unit in Cebu selected for a strategic partnership with Yokohama, Japan. Sustainability efforts include the "Smart Merkado," a market modernization project powered by renewable solar energy.
Furthermore, the government launched "Project Nurture," a mangrove planting initiative that ensures environmental protection remains a priority alongside progress. These efforts underscore the city's dedication to balancing development with ecological responsibility.
Tourism Enhancement
Under the "Sidlak Danao" initiative, the city will develop a new viewing deck and campsite at Mt. Manghilao. Funded by the "Green Green Green" program of the Department of Budget and Management, this project aims to improve public open spaces and boost tourism in the region.
As the city pursues these multifaceted initiatives, Mayor Durano emphasized the administration's collective approach. "Together with the people of Danao, we move forward with purpose, transparency, and unity," Durano stated, reinforcing the community-driven nature of the transformation.
