In a remarkable display of commitment to peace and security, Zamboanga del Sur has witnessed a significant voluntary surrender of firearms and explosives to authorities this week.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported the successful collection of 22 various firearms and 4 explosive devices from individuals across the province. This coordinated effort represents a major step forward in the region's ongoing peace and order campaign.
Coordinated Peace Initiative
Police Lieutenant Colonel Ruel P. Destacamento, the chief of police in San Miguel town, confirmed the successful operation that saw community members voluntarily turning over their weapons. The collection included:
- 13 homemade shotguns
- 4 caliber .38 revolvers
- 3 caliber .22 rifles
- 2 caliber .45 pistols
- 4 improvised explosive devices
Community Cooperation Drives Success
"This achievement reflects the growing trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community," stated Lt. Col. Destacamento. The voluntary surrender occurred during a coordinated campaign where residents willingly handed over the items without resistance.
The initiative forms part of the PNP's broader effort to reduce the number of loose firearms circulating in the region, which has been identified as a key factor in maintaining public safety and preventing criminal activities.
Enhanced Regional Security
Police Colonel John C. Divinagracia, acting provincial director of Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office, emphasized that this development significantly contributes to the overall security landscape of the province. The removal of these weapons from circulation reduces potential threats to public safety and demonstrates the effectiveness of community-police partnerships.
All surrendered items have been properly documented and are now under the custody of the San Miguel Municipal Police Station for appropriate disposition and further investigation.
