DFA Welcomes AFP Finding: No Terror Training in PH for Bondi Suspects
Australia Clears PH of Terror Training for Bondi Attackers

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed its approval of a crucial finding from Australian authorities, which clears the Philippines of any involvement in training the perpetrators of a tragic shooting in Sydney.

Australian Police Dismiss Philippine Terror Link

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the DFA issued a statement welcoming the assessment from the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The AFP confirmed that the two individuals suspected in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in December 2025 did not receive any terrorist training during their stay in the Philippines.

The department revealed that the AFP commissioner relayed the initial findings from the Philippine National Police (PNP). The assessment conclusively states there is "no evidence to suggest they received training or underwent logistical preparation for their alleged attack" while in the country from November 1 to November 29, 2025.

Furthermore, the Australian commissioner added that investigators found no proof the alleged offenders were part of a wider terrorist cell or were directed by others to carry out the assault. However, officials emphasized that this assessment remains part of an ongoing investigation.

Swift Philippine Cooperation Praised

The DFA also highlighted that Australian authorities acknowledged the prompt and effective assistance provided by Philippine agencies during the probe. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett gave credit to the swift response from the Philippines, noting that critical CCTV footage now under review by investigators would not have been available without it.

This cooperation forms a key part of the joint effort to understand the events that unfolded on December 14, 2025. On that day, a father-and-son duo opened fire from an elevated footbridge overlooking Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, including one of the gunmen.

Reaffirming Commitment Against Terrorism

As investigative collaboration continues, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro reiterated the Philippines' firm stance against terrorism. She emphasized the country's dedication to preventing violent extremism and nurturing closer intelligence and law-enforcement ties with Australia and other international partners.

"The Philippines and Australia will continue to jointly address transnational security threats, including terrorism, through sustained information sharing, operational coordination, and capacity-building initiatives," Secretary Lazaro stated. This partnership is vital for regional security and counters unfounded claims labeling the Philippines a terror hub following the Sydney incident.

The DFA's statement and the Australian assessment serve to strengthen the bilateral relationship and underscore a shared commitment to global security and justice.
