In a significant blow to illegal drug operations in Western Visayas, Iloilo City police apprehended a suspected drug peddler and confiscated an estimated P884,000 worth of shabu during a meticulously planned buy-bust operation on Tuesday.
The successful sting operation unfolded in Barangay San Pedro, Molo, where undercover agents from the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) engaged the suspect in a controlled drug transaction. Police identified the arrested individual as a 38-year-old resident of the area, now facing serious drug-related charges.
Massive Drug Haul Details
Authorities revealed the substantial seizure included approximately 130 grams of the illegal substance methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu. The street value of the confiscated drugs underscores the significance of this operation in disrupting local drug distribution networks.
"This operation demonstrates our relentless commitment to combating the drug trade in Iloilo City," stated Police Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Benitez Jr., who supervised the operation. "We will continue to pursue all individuals involved in this illegal activity that threatens our communities."
Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps
The suspect is currently detained at the Molo Police Station while awaiting the filing of formal charges for violation of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Police officials confirmed that the investigation remains active as they work to identify potential accomplices and upstream suppliers.
This latest successful operation forms part of the Philippine National Police's intensified campaign against illegal drugs across the region. Law enforcement officials have noted increased coordination between different units has led to more effective interdiction of drug trafficking activities in recent months.
Residents of Barangay San Pedro expressed relief at the arrest, with community leaders praising police efforts to maintain peace and order in the neighborhood. Local officials have reiterated their support for continuing anti-drug operations while emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
