US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. The US Central Command confirmed that military support will include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members. This is part of Trump's "Project Freedom" aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Defensive Mission
A US official clarified that this is not an escort mission. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper stated that the support is for a "defensive mission" critical to regional security and the global economy, while maintaining a naval blockade. The move has drawn criticism from top Iranian official Ebrahim Azizi, who called it a violation of the existing ceasefire.
Trump's Statement
On his Truth Social account, Trump said the guidance of ships is intended to free people, companies, and nations that are innocent and victims of circumstances. He also reported "very positive discussions" between American and Iranian representatives, which he believes will result in positive outcomes for all parties involved.
The announcement marks a significant escalation in US naval presence in the region, with the potential to impact global oil shipping routes through the strategically important waterway.
