Former Mayor Faces Lifetime Driving Ban Over Viral Gas Station Prank
A former mayor is now confronting the possibility of a permanent revocation of his driver's license following a widely circulated social media video that allegedly captured him engaging in a prank at a gas station. The incident, which has sparked public outrage, occurred along the Maharlika Highway in Allacapan, Cagayan, and involved the former official reportedly driving off without paying for fuel.
LTO Takes Swift Action Against the Incident
According to the Land Transportation Office (LTO), authorities are actively preparing to impose a lifetime ban on the former mayor's driving privileges. In addition to this severe penalty, the LTO plans to place an "alarm" status on his vehicle, effectively preventing its future use on public roads. This decisive move underscores the agency's commitment to enforcing road safety and ethical conduct among drivers.
The viral footage shows the former mayor allegedly fueling his car at a gas station but then departing without settling the payment. This prompted a pump attendant, who is a member of an Indigenous Peoples (IP) community, to chase after the vehicle in a desperate attempt to recover the owed amount. Further investigation has revealed that the former mayor may even own the gas station where the incident took place, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
Condemnation of the Prank as Dangerous and Degrading
In a strong statement, the LTO condemned the former official's actions, emphasizing that such situations should never be exploited for content creation, especially when they pose risks and degrade other individuals. The agency highlighted that the prank not only endangered the attendant but also undermined public trust in responsible driving practices.
It was also disclosed that the former mayor filmed the entire episode from the passenger seat of his car, later sharing it as part of a vlog content. This has raised concerns about the ethical implications of using potentially hazardous scenarios for entertainment purposes.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations
The LTO has issued a show cause order against the former mayor, the driver involved, and the registered owner of the vehicle. They are required to explain why they should not be charged with reckless driving and declared unfit to operate a motor vehicle. Meanwhile, the driver has been instructed to surrender his license, which is now under a 90-day preventive suspension as the investigation continues.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences that can arise from irresponsible behavior on the road, with the LTO reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy towards actions that compromise safety and dignity.
