In a candid and heartfelt revelation, beauty queen and Kapuso actress Kelley Day has disclosed that she stepped away from the glitz and glamour of show business due to a mental health disorder. The 29-year-old star opened up about her struggles in a recent interview with Pep Live, shedding light on the personal challenges that led to her hiatus from the entertainment industry.
Diagnosis and Family Crisis
Day revealed that she was diagnosed with panic disorder in June 2022, a period that coincided with a family health crisis. "I was diagnosed with panic disorder in June 2022 and it happened while my dad was in hospital," she explained. This dual burden of her own mental health issues and her father's hospitalization created an overwhelming situation for the actress.
Her last project before stepping back was the Kapuso primetime series "The World Between Us," which concluded in January 2022. Reflecting on that time, Day shared, "Na-overwhelm ako sa nangyari noon. Pero thank God, okay na yung dad ko. It was me who ended up suffering with sickness… I surrendered myself to whatever was gonna happen to me. And I just put trust in my doctors."
Journey to Acceptance and Recovery
Initially, Day admitted to being in denial about her condition, but she eventually reached a turning point. "It reached a point na nasa rock bottom na ako. And I had to accept the help that was being offered to me… I basically disappeared. I deleted all my social media. I just focused on me. I followed my doctor’s advice," she recounted. This decision to prioritize her well-being involved cutting off from the public eye and dedicating herself fully to her treatment plan.
Finding Support and Solidarity
Throughout her recovery, Day found solace in the support of others who understood her struggles. "So people that reach out to me, they have similar things din and it just makes you feel less alone," she said. This sense of community and shared experience played a crucial role in helping her navigate the challenges of panic disorder, reinforcing that she was not isolated in her journey.
Kelley Day's story highlights the importance of mental health awareness in the high-pressure world of show business, serving as an inspiration for others facing similar issues to seek help and prioritize self-care.
