Dumanjug bans cellphones in schools, tightens curfew

The municipal government of Dumanjug has banned students from bringing cellphones inside schools and tightened the implementation of curfew to protect the youth, Mayor Efren “Gungun” Gica announced on June 23, 2026.

Ban on cellphones in all schools

During a meeting with school heads in the municipality, Gica said the measures were prompted by a shooting incident in Tacloban City that killed and injured students, as well as a series of stabbings involving students in Cavite.

“No cellphones allowed in schools. Be it in elementary, high schools in our municipality of Dumanjug. No more cellphones inside the school premises,” Gica said.

The mayor ordered mandatory inspections of students, school personnel, and all individuals entering school premises to ensure that prohibited items such as cellphones, weapons, and other harmful objects are not brought inside.

Confiscation and return policy

If a student is found carrying a cellphone, the device will be confiscated and returned only after classes end, following the established rules.

Gica also urged teachers and parents to restore discipline among children so they can learn right from wrong.

Stricter curfew for minors

Aside from the gadget ban, the municipality will also strictly enforce curfew in internet cafes, Piso WiFi establishments, and other similar businesses. For Grade 10 students, curfew starts at 8:00 p.m., while for those aged 18, curfew begins at 10:00 p.m.
