Davao Mega Travel Sale 2026 Kicks Off with Expanded Global Reach and Economic Vision
The 16th Davao Mega Travel Sale (DMTS) officially commenced on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the Abreeza Ayala Malls in Davao City, marking a significant event in the region's tourism calendar. This three-day expo, running until March 1, brings together travel agencies, airlines, hotels, and tourism stakeholders under the vibrant theme, "Jetsetting to the World." The opening ceremony featured key figures including Gian Carlo Caguiat, president of the Davao Travel Agencies Association (Dtaa), Willenito Tormis Jr., officer-in-charge of the Davao City Tourism Operations Office, Davao City Councilor Myrna Dalodo Ortiz, Tanya Rabat-Tan, regional director of the Department of Tourism Davao Region, and Justin Warby, vice president for sales of Philippine Airlines.
Growth and Global Expansion of the Travel Sale
Gian Carlo Caguiat welcomed attendees by highlighting the event's evolution since its inception in 2008. "From humble beginnings, DMTS has grown into the premier travel sale in Mindanao," he stated, noting consistent increases in sales, exhibitor participation, and passengers served over the years. Caguiat emphasized that the sale transcends mere trip bookings, focusing instead on cultural discovery, tourism support, and community connections. This year, approximately 40 exhibitors are participating, including travel agencies, airline partners, hotels, and tourism operators from Davao City and Manila. The expo now offers travel packages covering all seven continents, with a special highlight on unique destinations in Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, building on last year's inclusion of Antarctica.
Economic and Tourism Impact in Davao City
Willenito Tormis Jr. described the 16th edition as a milestone for both the association and Davao City's travel sector. "Our dream is to bring Davao City to the world," he said, underscoring a shared responsibility to enhance tourism and deliver exceptional experiences to residents and visitors alike. Davao City Councilor Myrna Dalodo Ortiz, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification, praised Dtaa for its ongoing efforts to strengthen the local tourism industry. She noted that initiatives like the travel sale not only connect people to global destinations but also energize the local economy, generate employment, and position Davao as a dynamic hub for travel and business.
Strengthening Outbound and Domestic Tourism
Tanya Rabat-Tan emphasized the event's role in boosting both outbound and domestic tourism. "For the next three days, we are not just selling tickets; we are opening doors to discovering and learning from our tourism circuits to bucket list international adventures," she explained. Rabat-Tan added that the travel sale creates a positive impact on the tourism industry and helps position Davao and the Philippines as central to travelers' dreams, reflecting the sector's resilience and innovation. Justin Warby of Philippine Airlines, attending his first Davao mega travel fair, highlighted aviation's critical role in economic growth. "When people think of flights, they think of holidays. But connecting flights means connecting communities and cultures. It's not just tourism; it's economics," he remarked.
Accessibility and Community Engagement
Organizers aim to make travel more accessible, affordable, and meaningful through this event, catering to both international adventures and domestic tourism circuits. Partner airlines have increased their participation, offering special rates for the duration of the expo. Local attractions, such as Taglucop Strawberry Hills in Bukidnon, joined major hotel brands and outbound tour operators in the lineup. As the expo opened, exhibitors promoted discounted fares and curated packages, while travelers explored booths with maps and brochures, planning everything from first overseas trips to return journeys home. This vibrant atmosphere underscores the travel sale's commitment to fostering global connections and supporting local economic development in Mindanao.
