Davao City Prepares for Traffic Disruptions During IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon

As Davao City gears up to host the international IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon from March 20 to 22, 2026, authorities are implementing traffic adjustments and temporary road closures to accommodate the event. A promotional tarpaulin has already been displayed at the rotonda along Roxas Coastal Road, signaling the city's readiness for the influx of participants and visitors from across the Philippines and abroad.

Traffic Management Plans Unveiled

The City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) has outlined comprehensive traffic plans for the three-day sporting activities. CTTMO head Dionisio Abude emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring safe, orderly, and efficient traffic flow during the events. He urged motorists and residents to plan their trips in advance and adhere to posted advisories to minimize inconvenience.

During the ISpeak Media Forum on March 12, 2026, Abude called for public support, stating, "Let us support the activity by keeping things orderly. The IRONMAN will bring visitors from other countries, so let us show them that we are disciplined Dabawenyos." This appeal highlights the city's effort to maintain a positive image while hosting an international event.

Detailed Event Schedules and Road Closures

The traffic adjustments will affect various parts of the city over the three days:

  • Gwapa Dabawenya Run – March 20: Portions of Davao City Coastal Road near Bago Esplanade up to Coastal Road Rotonda toward Ecoland will face temporary closures during race hours. The event features 5K, 10K, and 21.1K race routes along the coastal stretch, with assembly starting at 3 p.m. and the gun start at 4 p.m.
  • IronKids – March 21: Participants will run along Davao Coastal Road toward Talomo Road before turning back to finish near Bago Aplaya Esplanade, requiring localized traffic management.
  • Ironman 70.3 Davao – March 22: Portions of Davao City Coastal Road, Tulip Drive, Ecoland Drive, and connecting streets will be impacted as athletes navigate bike and run courses, with temporary traffic adjustments implemented along the route.

Enforcement and Public Safety Measures

To facilitate smooth operations, CTTMO has installed 66 traffic advisory signs and is actively distributing information to nearby communities. Authorities have prohibited illegal parking along affected routes, with violators facing a P1,500 fine and potential towing. Additionally, at least 49 traffic personnel will be deployed at key intersections throughout the event to monitor and manage traffic flow.

These measures aim to balance the needs of the event with the daily routines of residents, ensuring that Davao City can successfully host the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon while minimizing disruptions to local life.
