CBCP Urges Senate to Start VP Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on the Senate to immediately commence the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. In a statement released on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the CBCP emphasized that senators must fulfill their constitutional duty by hearing witnesses and rendering a verdict based on evidence.

CBCP President's Appeal

CBCP President Archbishop Gilbert Garcera urged lawmakers to avoid actions that could be perceived as delaying or evading the process. He stressed that postponing the proceedings is equivalent to postponing justice for both the Filipino people and the Vice President.

“We make this urgent appeal to not delay the trial and to convene the Senate as an impeachment court at the soonest possible time. To delay the trial is to delay justice for both the Filipino people and the Vice President,” the CBCP statement read.

Constitutional Duty

The CBCP reminded senators of their constitutional obligation to act as an impeachment court. The bishops underscored that the trial must be conducted fairly and expeditiously, ensuring that all evidence is considered and that the rights of all parties are respected.

The call comes amid growing public interest and political tension surrounding the impeachment case against Vice President Duterte. The CBCP's appeal reflects a broader demand for accountability and transparency in the country's highest offices.
