PNP Cracks Down on Counterfeit Cancer Drug Operation in Makati Hotel

In a significant law enforcement operation, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has apprehended four individuals accused of illegally selling counterfeit cancer medications in Makati City. The arrests were made following an entrapment operation conducted by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) inside a hotel in the city on April 10, 2026.

Massive Seizure of Fake Medications Valued at Over P102 Million

Authorities confiscated a substantial haul of 400 pieces of counterfeit cancer drugs labeled as Keytruda 100mg/4ml during the operation. The estimated market value of these seized medications is a staggering P102,577,500, highlighting the scale of this illicit trade. The suspects now face charges for violating Republic Act 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, which carries severe penalties for such offenses.

PNP Chief Issues Stern Warning on Grave Health Risks

PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised the operating units for their successful crackdown and emphasized the serious nature of the crime. “This is no trivial crime. The sale of fake medicines directly puts the lives of our fellow citizens at risk. We will not allow these illegal activities to thrive,” Nartatez stated. He underscored that counterfeit drugs can have deadly consequences, as they may lack active ingredients or contain harmful substances, jeopardizing patient health and safety.

Public Advisory and Legal Accountability Stressed

In a direct message to the public, Nartatez urged caution and vigilance when purchasing health-related products. “To our fellow citizens, be cautious and discerning when buying products, especially those related to health. Do not easily trust suspicious transactions,” he advised. Additionally, he issued a firm warning to those involved in similar illegal activities: “And to those who are doing this, this is our warning—you will not get away. You will be held accountable under the law.” This statement reinforces the PNP's commitment to combating fraud and protecting consumers from dangerous scams.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts by Philippine authorities to tackle the proliferation of counterfeit goods, particularly in the healthcare sector, where such crimes pose immediate threats to public welfare. Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, PNP spokesperson, confirmed the details in an official statement, noting that the investigation is ongoing to identify any additional accomplices or networks involved in the illegal trade.
