New Army Task Force Assumes Security Command in Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY – In a significant military transition, the Joint Task Force (JTF)-Zampelan has officially taken over operational responsibility for Zamboanga City, effective Friday, April 10, 2026. This move follows the redeployment of the 1st Marine Rifle Battalion to the northern part of the Philippines, marking a strategic shift in the Armed Forces of the Philippines' (AFP) security posture.
Seasoned Veterans Lead the Transition
The 1st Marine Rifle Battalion was formally relieved by a battalion-sized Philippine Army contingent from the 102nd Infantry Brigade (102Bde), reinforced with specialized assets including K9 units, Explosive Ordnance Demolition teams, armor, and sea patrol capabilities. According to a statement from the 1st Infantry Division (1ID), this new unit is predominantly composed of seasoned veterans with extensive combat experience from operations in Basilan, the 2013 Zamboanga Siege, and the 2017 Marawi Siege.
The 1ID emphasized that their proven resilience and tactical expertise significantly enhance the operational capability of the task force, reinforcing the AFP's unwavering commitment to vigilance, readiness, and the continued security of Zamboanga City.
Ceremony Highlights Readiness and Coordination
Brigadier General Aldrin Annani, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) deputy commander for external defense operations, spearheaded the turnover ceremony on April 10. The event underscored the readiness of JTF-Zampelan to address evolving security challenges and to strengthen coordination with local government units, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders.
During the ceremony, Annani remarked, "Deployment is the ultimate test of a soldier’s resolve. It calls us to leave the comfort of our homes and the company of our families in answer to a higher calling—the protection of the Filipino people."
Leadership and Community Support
Operational command has been entrusted to Brigadier General Samuel Yunque, commander of the 102Bde, a decorated war hero and veteran of both the Zamboanga Siege and the Marawi liberation. The 1ID noted that Yunque's leadership reflects seasoned experience and enduring inspiration, ensuring that JTF-Zampelan remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the city and its residents.
The Zamboanga City government, led by Mayor Khymer Olaso, warmly welcomed the Philippine Army contingent upon their arrival. In his message, Olaso emphasized the importance of a unified security approach and commended JTF-Zampelan for fostering cooperation among stakeholders. He also expressed gratitude to the 1st Marine Rifle Battalion, affirming that the success of the city's security initiatives relies on strong partnerships and shared responsibility.
This transition highlights the AFP's adaptive strategies in maintaining peace and order, with a focus on leveraging experienced personnel and community engagement to ensure the safety of Zamboanga City.
