Cebu Governor Faces Death Threat, Police Ramp Up Protective Measures

The Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) has significantly strengthened security protocols for Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro following the receipt of a credible death threat against her life. This development has prompted an immediate and comprehensive response from local law enforcement to ensure the safety of the governor and her immediate family members.

Enhanced Security Details and Family Protection

According to Police Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr., the chief of police for Cebu Province, the security enhancements extend beyond the governor herself to include her entire family. Mangelen emphasized that while all elected or appointed government officials are entitled to two security personnel under standard protocols, the situation involving a governor who has received a direct threat warrants additional support.

The CPPO director has formally requested and received approval for augmentation of security forces, allowing for a more robust protective detail. This move underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the threat, aiming to prevent any potential harm.

Comprehensive Security Survey and Capitol Grounds Inspection

In addition to personal security, the police have conducted a thorough security survey and inspection at the Provincial Capitol building. This initiative is designed to fortify the governor's office and the entire administrative complex against any security breaches. Mangelen described the Capitol as a vital installation, given that it houses the highest-ranking official of the provincial government, necessitating heightened vigilance.

As part of the broader security strategy, Mangelen has coordinated with other specialized police units, including the Aviation Security Unit, Highway Patrol Group, and the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG). These collaborations aim to provide a multi-layered security approach, leveraging the expertise of various law enforcement branches.

Establishment of Quick Reaction Team and Police Detachment Proposal

To ensure rapid response capabilities, a Quick Reaction Team has been established. Mangelen highlighted that this team is well-trained and equipped with the necessary tools to respond effectively in emergencies, should their assistance be required. This proactive measure is intended to mitigate risks and enhance overall security readiness.

Furthermore, Mangelen revealed that one of their key recommendations is to establish a permanent Police Detachment on the Capitol Grounds. This proposal aims to provide continuous security not only for the governor but also for all provincial officials, reinforcing the Capitol's status as a secure governmental hub.

Investigation and Validation of the Threat

The threat was reportedly brought to light by a friend of Governor Baricuatro, who alerted authorities about the presence of individuals allegedly plotting against her life. Mangelen confirmed that this information has been deemed a serious threat, warranting immediate and urgent attention from the police.

An in-depth investigation has been launched, with Mangelen stating that they are already collaborating with intelligence communities for validation purposes. This step is crucial to ascertain the credibility of the threat and identify any potential perpetrators, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to safeguard the governor and maintain public safety in Cebu Province.
