The International Criminal Court (ICC) held its first status conference for the case of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, discussing the use of English and Filipino as primary languages in the Philippines. According to the prosecution panel, it is important for Filipinos to understand the entire trial process, especially as the public closely monitors the case developments.
Language Accessibility in the Trial
The ICC has agreed to provide interpreters for witnesses testifying against Duterte to translate courtroom discussions into their native languages. Meanwhile, Duterte's legal team stated that their client does not require an interpreter.
Trial Schedule and Health Assessment
The ICC Trial Chamber III, presided over by Judge Joanna Korner, has scheduled the trial for November 2026 on charges of crimes against humanity. The court will also review the results of a new assessment by three ICC-accredited experts regarding the former president's health, which may affect certain considerations.
