NGCP Warns Against Kite Flying Near Power Facilities

NGCP Issues Critical Summer Safety Alert on Kite Flying Near Power Infrastructure

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued a pressing reminder to parents and Local Government Units (LGUs) across the nation, urging them to strictly prohibit children from flying kites in close proximity to transmission lines, towers, substations, and other critical power facilities. This warning comes as the summer season sees a notable increase in such hazardous activities, with incidents rising steadily according to the electric firm.

Rising Incidents and Public Safety Concerns

During the warmer months, kites frequently become entangled in overhead power lines or even manage to enter substations, creating dangerous scenarios. The NGCP emphasized that these situations can lead to line tripping and unscheduled power interruptions, disrupting electricity flow for communities and posing significant risks to public safety. The corporation highlighted that such disruptions not only inconvenience residents but also endanger lives due to potential electrical hazards.

Strengthening Enforcement and Legal Compliance

In response to the escalating risks, the NGCP has called upon LGUs to intensify their enforcement of anti-kite flying campaigns. By bolstering these efforts, local authorities can help prevent disruptions in electricity transmission and ensure the safety of their communities. The grid corporation reiterated that kite flying near power facilities is strictly prohibited under the Anti-Obstruction of Power Lines Act, a law designed to protect infrastructure and public welfare.

A Call for Collective Responsibility

The NGCP concluded its statement with a heartfelt appeal for cooperation, stating, "Once again, for everyone’s safety and to maintain uninterrupted electricity, please cooperate and follow the established laws and regulations." This reminder underscores the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding both power infrastructure and community well-being during the summer season and beyond.
