In a significant anti-drug operation, law enforcement authorities in the Zamboanga Peninsula have successfully apprehended two suspects and seized illegal drugs valued at approximately P3.4 million. The dramatic incident unfolded on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, culminating in a chase and a brief exchange of gunfire.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
According to officials, the operation led to the arrest of two individuals identified through their aliases as Al, a 31-year-old from Cavite, and Al Ha, a 32-year-old resident of Quezon City. Bryan Babang, the director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Zamboanga Peninsula, confirmed the arrests but did not specify which of the suspects sustained injuries during the shootout.
The Chase and Confrontation
The events began around 8:50 p.m. on March 31, when a planned buy-bust operation was set to take place in Veterans Village, Ipil, the capital of Zamboanga Sibugay. However, the suspects reportedly sensed the presence of additional law enforcement teams in the area and attempted to flee by speeding toward the highway bound for Zamboanga City.
Operating teams immediately launched a hot pursuit, intercepting the suspects' vehicle at the boundary between Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga City. When the vehicle was flagged down, a brief exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in one suspect being wounded. The injured individual received prompt medical attention, and both suspects were subsequently taken into custody.
Items Confiscated and Legal Charges
Authorities confiscated a substantial haul from the suspects, including approximately 500 grams of suspected shabu with an estimated street value of P3.4 million. Additional items seized were a Sports Utility Vehicle, a mobile phone, one caliber .45 pistol, several non-drug items, and the buy-bust money used in the operation.
The suspects now face serious legal repercussions. They will be charged with violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, highlighting the gravity of their alleged offenses.
Collaborative Law Enforcement Effort
This successful anti-drug operation was a coordinated effort involving PDEA operatives, supported by police units and the Army's 106th Infantry Battalion. The collaboration underscores the ongoing commitment of multiple agencies to combat illegal drug activities in the region, ensuring public safety and upholding the law.
