P840K Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Jolo

Authorities in Sulu have intercepted a major shipment of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of nearly one million pesos. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) made the significant bust at the port of Jolo, the province's capital.

Contraband Intercepted During Routine Inspection

Personnel from the Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Western Sulu discovered the illegal goods while conducting standard port security and cargo inspection operations. The seizure occurred on Sunday, December 28, at 6:49 p.m., aboard a passenger vessel that was moored and preparing for departure.

The vessel was scheduled to leave Jolo for Zamboanga City when vigilant coast guardsmen found the undeclared items. The smuggled cigarettes were cleverly concealed within 13 boxes and a traveling bag, all of which were loaded onto the ship without the necessary legal documents or permits.

No Claimant for P840,000 Worth of Goods

Following the discovery, no individual stepped forward to claim ownership of the contraband, highlighting the clandestine nature of the smuggling attempt. The total haul consisted of 348 reams of cigarettes. Authorities have placed the market value of the seized items at approximately P840,000.

To ensure proper legal handling and disposition, the confiscated cigarettes were formally turned over the next day, Monday, December 29, to the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port of Jolo. This transfer is a standard procedure, allowing the Bureau of Customs to lead the investigation and any subsequent legal actions.

Ongoing Vigilance Against Smuggling

This successful operation underscores the continued vigilance of the Philippine Coast Guard in securing the country's ports and maritime borders. Interceptions like this disrupt the flow of illicit goods, protect government revenue from unpaid taxes and duties, and enforce national customs laws.

The PCG's proactive inspection at the Jolo port demonstrates their critical role in regional security and economic protection. Such operations are a constant effort to combat smuggling activities in the Sulu archipelago and across the Philippines.
