Three Law Enforcement Officers Killed in Palawan Shootout During Wake Dispute
In a tragic incident on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, two police officers and a Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) employee lost their lives in a shootout in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., issued a statement expressing profound grief over the deaths, which occurred during routine law enforcement operations in Barangay Irawan.

According to preliminary reports, the violent encounter stemmed from a mauling at a wake. Men who were drinking at the event attacked two individuals, who then sought assistance from the police. Upon arrival, officers questioned those present, leading to escalating tensions that culminated in a brief but deadly gunfight. All three victims—the two police officers and the BuCor employee—succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Investigation Ordered and Vigilance Emphasized
General Nartatez has directed the Mimaropa Police Regional Office (PRO-4B) to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover all circumstances surrounding the incident. He emphasized the importance of vigilance for all personnel when responding to calls for help and during law enforcement operations. "The loss of our brave officers is a tragic reminder of the risks our men and women in uniform face every day. We honor their service and courage, and we remain committed to protecting our communities," Nartatez stated.
He further urged officers to stay on guard and careful, adding, "We should always be on guard and careful. Stay vigilant, protect each other, and serve the community with utmost dedication."

Despite the bloody encounter, Nartatez assured residents of Palawan that the province remains secure. "We are intensifying our police visibility and intelligence operations throughout Palawan to prevent any escalation. The situation remains under control. I assure the public that the PNP is working non-stop to secure our communities. Do not fear, because your police force is on high alert," he said.
In addition, the PNP leadership has committed to providing full support for the bereaved families of the slain officers. "The PNP will shoulder all burial and funeral expenses. We will also provide comprehensive financial assistance and counseling for the families. Their sacrifice will not be in vain," Nartatez added, highlighting the organization's dedication to honoring those killed in action.
