Vice President Sara Duterte expressed her appreciation for the public's support and trust in the Office of the Vice President on Thursday, April 9, 2026. This statement followed the release of a March 2026 survey that positioned her as the leading preferred candidate for the presidency in 2028.
Survey Results and Duterte's Response
Citing data from the Philippine Public Opinion Monitor, Duterte acknowledged her frontrunner status but noted she does not intend to commission her own surveys. She emphasized that such surveys are expensive and may not comprehensively cover all regions of the country.
Political Plans and Candidacy Details
Duterte revealed that she has not yet finalized a senatorial slate, although several individuals have shown interest in joining her lineup. She added that she currently has no vice presidential running mate and plans to announce one at the appropriate time once a suitable candidate is prepared.
She declined to name those who have expressed interest, citing the current political climate. Duterte mentioned that some of her allies have faced harassment, threats, and attacks, highlighting the challenges in the pre-election period.
"All are still presumptive candidates, and without the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC), there is no assurance they will pursue a specific position," Duterte stated during a media interview at the Veterans Memorial Monument in Davao City.
Awaiting the Filing Period
Duterte urged patience, saying, "Antayin natin sa darating na at malapit na yon, darating na ang period of filing of certificate of candidacy sa susunod na taon (Let’s wait for what’s coming—it’s near. The filing period for certificates of candidacy will be next year)."
Survey Breakdown and Competitor Analysis
