In a significant development for regional peace efforts, seventeen high-powered firearms were voluntarily surrendered to military authorities in Maguindanao del Sur on March 26, 2026. The weapons were handed over by individuals previously involved in a community-based conflict in Mamasapano, demonstrating a sincere commitment to ending violence and fostering stability in the area.
Ceremony Marks Progress Toward Peace
The formal presentation of the firearms took place during a ceremony led by Brigadier General Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade. The event, held in Mamasapano, was organized by the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) and highlighted as a positive milestone in reducing armed confrontations and strengthening communal harmony.
Collaborative Efforts Facilitate Surrender
The surrender process was coordinated by Lieutenant Colonel Edgardo Batinay of the 34th Infantry Battalion and Lieutenant Colonel Erwin Felongco of the 38th Infantry Battalion. They worked closely with Mamasapano Mayor Akmad Ampatuan Jr., local village officials, the Municipal Local Government Operations Officer, and police forces to ensure a smooth and peaceful handover.
Brigadier General Catu praised the robust partnership between the military, police, local government units, and community leaders, which he credited for making the firearm surrender possible. "This achievement reflects the power of unity and cooperation. We encourage others to follow this example and take part in building a more peaceful and secure community," Catu stated in an official release.

Major General Jose Vladimir Cagara, commander of the 6ID and Joint Task Force-Central, expressed strong support for the initiative. He emphasized that the voluntary surrender underscores the community's genuine desire to resolve disputes without violence. "The voluntary surrender of firearms demonstrates the sincere intention of our communities to resolve conflicts peacefully. It also strengthens the trust between the people and the government," Cagara remarked.
Mayor Ampatuan extended gratitude to all stakeholders and the individuals who chose to relinquish their firearms. He stressed that lasting peace begins with a collective decision to reject violence and embrace unity, highlighting the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation.
