Newly elected Senate President Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano has asserted that only arrest warrants from Philippine courts will be recognized concerning Senator Ronald dela Rosa. This follows an attempt to serve an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Senate on Monday, May 11.
Cayetano's Stance on ICC Warrant
According to Cayetano, the Constitution is clear that a warrant of arrest must come from a Philippine judge before the Senate recognizes it. He added that typically, a senator voluntarily surrenders after exhausting all legal remedies.
Failed Service of ICC Warrant
The attempt to serve the ICC warrant failed after a chase between National Bureau of Investigation personnel and Dela Rosa. Cayetano condemned the incident, saying it is unjust to pursue a senator to prevent attendance at a Senate session, especially when the warrant presented is from the ICC, which they have not yet seen.
