Marcos's 'Firm but Diplomatic' Stance on China Relations

Malacañang has firmly reiterated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. maintains a "firm but diplomatic" position regarding the Philippines' relationship with China. According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, the President's stance is clear in defending the nation's sovereignty and rights, while simultaneously preserving an orderly and open line of communication with China.

Balancing Sovereignty and Diplomacy

The government assures that it will remain steadfast in protecting Philippine territory, all while upholding calm and constructive engagement with other countries. This approach underscores a commitment to national interests without escalating tensions unnecessarily.

Respect for Press Freedom Amid Diplomatic Exchanges

In response to recent statements from the Chinese Embassy condemning Senate Resolution No. 256, the Palace has emphasized its respect for freedom of the press. Undersecretary Castro stated that President Marcos respects the right of all parties to express their opinions openly.

She highlighted that if China has the freedom to voice its views, so do Filipinos and the Senate, reinforcing the principle of mutual expression in international discourse.

No Intention to Silence Dissent

Castro clarified that the Palace does not view the Chinese Embassy's remarks as an attempt to silence the Senate. Instead, she affirmed that the Senate, like any entity, has the right to speak out and share its sentiments on matters of national importance.

This stance reflects a broader diplomatic strategy aimed at managing differences through dialogue while upholding democratic values and territorial integrity.
