In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, authorities have apprehended 12 individuals and seized approximately P5.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes along with a firearm during a law enforcement operation in the Bangsamoro province of Maguindanao del Norte. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 20, 2026, in Duran village, Parang, marking a substantial victory in ongoing anti-smuggling efforts.

Details of the Operation and Seizure

Police Brigadier General Jaysen de Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), reported that the operation was conducted around 1:20 a.m. on April 20. Acting on coordinated intelligence, policemen, in partnership with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), established a checkpoint that intercepted three vehicles laden with suspected smuggled goods.

The confiscated items included 6,500 reams of Cannon brand cigarettes, valued at an estimated P5,431,725, and a caliber .45 pistol. De Guzman emphasized that the identities of the suspects, which include a minor, are being withheld pending further investigation to ensure due process.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Efforts

Following the arrest, all individuals, along with the seized firearm and contraband, were transported to the Parang Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and disposition. Authorities have indicated that the suspects will face charges under Anti-Smuggling Laws and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, highlighting the serious nature of the offenses.

The smuggled cigarettes are slated to be handed over to the BOC Sub-Port in Parang for further legal action, ensuring that the evidence is processed in accordance with regulatory frameworks. De Guzman reiterated the commitment of law enforcement to intensify anti-smuggling operations and bolster border control measures, aiming to protect the national economy and uphold the rule of law.
