Philippines Takes Charge at BIMP-EAGA Strategic Planning Meeting in Brunei

The 2026 Strategic Planning Meeting (SPM) of the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) officially began on Monday, February 9, in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. This pivotal event brought together more than 300 participants, including government officials, development partners, and private sector representatives from across the subregion.

Focus on Action and Implementation

Hosted by Brunei Darussalam and chaired by the Philippines, the five-day meeting aims to transform the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 into concrete programs, projects, and investments. The goal is to accelerate inclusive growth, particularly in border and island communities. In his opening remarks as Standing Chair of National Secretariats, Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, Deputy Executive Director of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), emphasized the need for decisive action.

"This Strategic Planning Meeting is not just about frameworks; it is about action. It is about turning our shared vision into measurable outcomes and real improvements in the lives of our people and communities," Montenegro stated.

Collaborative Efforts and Sector Priorities

Participants are actively working to solidify sector priorities, agree on outcome targets, and identify convergence initiatives. Key areas of focus include economic corridors, the blue economy, connectivity, and sustainable development. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing technical facilitation to support these efforts.

During the 16th BIMP-EAGA Leaders’ Summit in Kuala Lumpur, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for enhanced collaboration, innovation, and political will to sustain the subregion's growth. He highlighted that synergy among member countries is essential for achieving transformative progress under Vision 2035.

Strategic Planning as a Backbone for Growth

The SPM serves as the planning backbone for BIMP-EAGA, aligning national priorities, strengthening public-private partnerships, and building a robust pipeline of bankable regional projects. Under the Philippine Chairmanship, discussions are centered on project readiness, investment mobilization, and results-driven collaboration.

By the conclusion of the meeting, delegates are expected to adopt clearer roadmaps and coordinated actions. This will reinforce BIMP-EAGA's collective commitment to fostering a more connected, competitive, and resilient East ASEAN growth area.

Broader Implications for Regional Cooperation

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has consistently emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in advancing inclusive growth and sustainable development. His support for BIMP-EAGA reflects the Philippines' broader commitment to strengthening ties with ASEAN neighbors.

The Philippines' upcoming hosting of the ASEAN Summit further underscores the Marcos Administration's role in promoting regional integration and collective prosperity. Additionally, the outcomes of this Strategic Planning Meeting will directly contribute to realizing the administration's vision of a more resilient and globally competitive Philippine economy.
