The House of Representatives is set to investigate the alleged extortion incident involving social media personality Franco Mabanta and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Tingog party-list Representative Jude Acidre, along with 40 other House members, will file a resolution to probe the case.
Privilege Speech Highlights
In his privilege speech, Acidre stated that the move is “in aid of legislation” to examine the incident involving social media influencers and online political operators. The congressman emphasized that the investigation aims to address the broader issue of whether social media commentators should be held to the same standards of conduct as traditional media and journalists.
Call for Policy Framework
Acidre also cited the need for a policy framework that upholds press freedom. “Online platforms, digital media networks, and content creators must observe clearer standards of transparency and responsibility,” he added.
Arrest and Release
According to reports, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested Mabanta and four other individuals in an entrapment operation for alleged robbery-extortion. The case involves an alleged extortion of P300 million from Romualdez in exchange for not releasing content linking him to a flood control issue. After the arrest, the suspects were released after posting bail.
