The Philippine Senate on Monday ordered the citation in contempt of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents who allegedly attempted to arrest Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa inside the Senate premises. The motion, filed by Senator Joel Villanueva, sought to hold the involved NBI agents in contempt and place them under Senate custody. The motion was immediately approved by the majority.
Newly installed Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said he directed the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms to take the individuals into Senate custody. Cayetano added that they could seek assistance from the Philippine National Police in Pasay City to enforce the order until the agents provide an explanation.
According to CCTV footage, Dela Rosa was seen quickly running towards the Senate plenary hall to avoid arrest by pursuing plainclothes NBI agents. Dela Rosa attended the session with a wound and blood on his left finger. On the floor, the senator became emotional as he recounted the incident and the alleged attempt by agents to prevent him from entering the Senate building.
Meanwhile, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV claimed that the NBI had a copy of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Dela Rosa related to crimes against humanity linked to the war on drugs of former President Rodrigo Duterte's administration. This was Dela Rosa's first attendance in the Senate since November 11, 2025. Based on the Senate attendance sheet, he had been absent for 31 plenary sessions.
