Divers have recovered approximately 1,400 human bones from Taal Lake, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensics Group. The bones will undergo a series of analyses, including medico-legal, anthropological, radiographic imaging, dental, and DNA testing.
Link to Missing Sabungero Case
The recovery is connected to the case of missing cockfighters after Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan testified that the bodies of victims were allegedly thrown into Taal Lake on the orders of fugitive businessman Charlie 'Atong' Ang, who is identified as the mastermind of the crime.
Challenges in Forensic Analysis
Forensic experts are struggling to obtain DNA profiles due to severe degradation of the bones caused by sulfuric acid, magnesium, aluminum, sodium, and high temperatures in the lake. As a result, the PNP is using more thorough methods of analysis, including repeated sampling from the bones to increase the likelihood of obtaining viable DNA evidence.
If sufficient DNA samples are obtained, authorities may collaborate with laboratories in Japan or the University of the Philippines for further testing.
Legal Proceedings
Meanwhile, Atong Ang and 21 other respondents, most of whom are police officers, face charges of kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention filed in courts in Batangas and Laguna in connection with the disappearance of the cockfighters.
