PNP Pursues Suspects in Ombudsman Data Leak

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Monday a widespread pursuit of individuals involved in the data leak of sensitive personal information belonging to investigators of the Office of the Ombudsman. PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that the national police will intensify efforts to track down those behind the incident to ensure the safety of affected personnel.

Investigation Scope

The investigation will focus not only on external groups but also on possible involvement of internal actors within the agency itself. The police warned that anyone found involved in the data leak will face criminal charges under the Data Privacy Act and the Anti-Cybercrime Prevention Act.

Background

The PNP's action stems from the Office of the Ombudsman's strong condemnation on Sunday of the online dissemination of its personnel's identities. According to the agency, the incident is a clear attempt to intimidate its investigators and endanger their lives.
