Motorists in Mandaue City could soon experience some welcome financial relief as local officials are actively pushing for a temporary reduction in vehicle registration fees. This initiative comes in response to the ongoing economic difficulties that have placed a significant strain on many residents, prompting the City Council to take proactive steps to support the community.
Council Approves Resolution for Fee Reduction
The Mandaue City Council has recently approved a resolution that formally urges the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to consider lowering registration fees and other associated charges. Councilor Jennifer Del Mar, who spearheaded the effort, emphasized that the primary goal is to alleviate the burden on drivers and consumers who are grappling with rising costs. "Well, actually, we just passed it because we want to ease the burden of our motorists and consumers," Del Mar stated, highlighting the growing financial pressures faced by the city's residents.
Addressing Economic Challenges
Del Mar explained that this move is part of the City's broader strategy to find practical solutions to current economic hardships. "We all know that we're facing a very difficult problem lately, so we're looking for ways and means to somehow be in a position to help them," she added. The councilor clarified that the request specifically targets registration fees and does not include penalties for traffic violations, ensuring that enforcement measures remain intact. "No, no, it's a violation, so we should still continue with the violations. But only registration fees," she noted.
Collaboration with National Agencies
To advance the proposal, Del Mar has reached out to both the LTO and the Cebu Provincial Capitol, expressing hope for a positive response. Importantly, the City did not specify the exact amount of the reduction, leaving that decision to the concerned agencies based on feasibility. "I didn't indicate the reduction, it should be them who indicate that. We're just hoping that they see a way of giving a solution to the present problem that we're facing right now," Del Mar remarked.
Next Steps and Potential Impact
While the measure is currently a resolution and not yet an ordinance, Del Mar stressed that it represents a crucial first step in the process. The City Government plans to formally present the resolution to the LTO to push for actionable outcomes. "This is not yet an ordinance. This is just for the resolution, but with this resolution, we could push forward with what should be done next," she explained.
If approved by national agencies, this proposal could provide much-needed relief to motorists struggling with escalating expenses, offering a tangible benefit during challenging economic times. The initiative underscores Mandaue City's commitment to supporting its residents through innovative and responsive governance.
