The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has significantly ramped up its deployment of frontline personnel across major international airports in the Philippines to effectively manage the anticipated surge in passenger volume during the upcoming Holy Week period. This proactive measure aims to streamline immigration processing and mitigate potential delays as thousands of travelers are expected to pass through key gateways.
Commissioner Viado's Advisory for Smooth Travel
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado issued a detailed statement on Monday, emphasizing the need for public cooperation. "We are forecasting a substantial increase in passenger traffic this Holy Week. Our officers are fully mobilized and strategically positioned to guarantee smooth and efficient processing. However, we strongly urge the public to arrive at airports well in advance and ensure all necessary travel documents are complete and readily available," Viado stated.
Key Travel Requirements and Preparations
To facilitate a hassle-free journey, Commissioner Viado outlined several critical reminders for different categories of travelers:
- General Travelers: Arrive at the airport at least three hours before the scheduled flight departure. Double-check that all required travel documents, such as passports and visas, are secured beforehand to prevent last-minute issues.
- Government Employees: Those traveling abroad, even for personal reasons, must present a valid travel authority issued by their respective government agencies. This requirement is mandatory to ensure compliance with administrative protocols.
- Unaccompanied Minors: Minors traveling alone must obtain the necessary travel clearance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development prior to their departure to ensure their safety and legal compliance.
- Foreign Nationals: Foreigners who have resided in the Philippines for more than six months are reminded to secure their Emigration Clearance Certificates before leaving the country. Additionally, registered foreigners holding ACR I-Cards should obtain reentry permits in advance through BI offices or at the BI One-Stop-Shop located in NAIA.
Technological Enhancements for Efficiency
The Bureau continues to leverage advanced technological systems to enhance operational efficiency. Commissioner Viado highlighted the ongoing use of the e-gates system, which has proven to significantly reduce processing times and improve the overall flow at immigration counters. This automated solution helps expedite the clearance process for eligible passengers, contributing to a more streamlined experience.
Furthermore, travelers are encouraged to utilize the eTravel platform by filling out their forms via the official website at eTravel.gov.ph or through the eGovPH super app. Viado clarified that the use of eTravel is completely free of charge and serves as a digital tool to pre-process travel information, thereby reducing manual paperwork and wait times.
Aligning with Government Directives
Commissioner Viado underscored that these initiatives are part of a broader effort to align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance the delivery of government services, particularly during peak travel seasons. By promoting early preparation and leveraging technology, the BI aims to decongest airport queues and ensure a seamless travel experience for all passengers, reinforcing the commitment to public service and operational excellence.
