In a targeted operation in the mountainous area of Sityo Cambitas, Barangay Babag, Cebu City, a 46-year-old farmer was apprehended by authorities following multiple complaints from neighbors about recurrent gunfire. The suspect, identified as Oliver Geraldin Navarro, faced arrest after the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) - Mandaue City Field Unit executed a search warrant issued by the court.
Legal Basis and Raid Details
The raid was conducted on the morning of Thursday, April 9, 2026, under the authority of a search warrant granted by Judge Anacleto Debalucos of RTC Branch 17 in Cebu City on April 7, 2026. This action was in direct response to violations of Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Act, which regulates the possession and use of firearms in the Philippines.
Seized Items and Community Concerns
During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated a significant cache of weapons from Navarro. The seized items included a .45 caliber pistol loaded with six bullets, one .50 caliber slug, one 5.56 caliber slug, and a grenade. These discoveries heightened concerns among local residents, who had reported that Navarro often carried firearms, especially when intoxicated, and would fire shots when angered, instilling fear in the community.
Background and Broader Implications
According to CIDG personnel, Navarro is allegedly linked to murder cases in Mindanao, adding a layer of seriousness to the arrest. This operation is part of CIDG's flagship program, Oplan Paglalansag Omega, which aims to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety through proactive measures. The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by Philippine authorities to combat illegal firearms and address community safety issues in remote areas.
