Cebu Province Distributes Rice to Over 2,100 PUJ Drivers in First Phase
Cebu Gives Rice to 2,120 PUJ Drivers in Initial Distribution

In a significant relief initiative, the Province of Cebu has successfully distributed rice to thousands of Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers, marking the first phase of a broader support program for transport workers. On Thursday, April 9, 2026, a total of 2,120 PUJ drivers in Cebu Province received 10 kilos of rice each during an initial distribution event held at the Capitol.

Targeting Over 4,000 Transport Workers

Elizar Sabinay, the executive assistant to the Provincial Governor, announced that the Capitol aims to extend this assistance to more than 4,000 transport workers. This group includes not only drivers but also operators and conductors, highlighting a comprehensive approach to supporting the local transportation sector during challenging times.

Verification Process Ensures Eligibility

To qualify for the rice distribution, beneficiaries must undergo a strict verification process. Requirements include being a resident of Cebu Province, holding a valid driver's license, and having endorsement from their operator on the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board 7 list. This ensures that the aid reaches the intended recipients efficiently and fairly.

Future Distributions Planned

Sabinay confirmed that additional rounds of distribution are scheduled for the coming weeks. For instance, areas like Toledo and Balamban will be covered as part of the ongoing Caravan of Services, which facilitates the rice distribution across the province. This phased approach allows for organized and widespread support, ensuring no eligible transport worker is left behind.

The initiative underscores the provincial government's commitment to alleviating economic pressures on essential workers, particularly in the public transportation industry. By providing basic necessities like rice, Cebu Province aims to bolster the livelihoods of those who keep the local economy moving, fostering resilience and community support in the face of ongoing challenges.
