Cebu Governor Stands Firm Amid Death Threats, Links to Anti-Illegal Campaigns
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has publicly declared that recent death threats against her will not hinder her commitment to public service. This assurance comes several weeks after she first revealed receiving anonymous life threats, which she anticipated due to her aggressive stance against illegal operations in the province.
Governor Attributes Threats to Crackdown on Illegal Activities
In a statement on February 18, 2026, Governor Baricuatro acknowledged expecting such threats, citing her administration's active efforts to dismantle illegal drug networks, cigarette smuggling, unauthorized quarrying, and gambling. "You know expected na man na because we have been very active with our crackdown sa illegal drugs, cigarettes and the illegal quarry, illegal gambling, so it's been going on. So I expect it somehow," she explained.
While not confirming this as the sole cause, she suspects it is a primary factor. "I suppose that should be one but who knows there could be something else you know but then for now that's something that we can think of considering that we have been very active against the problem of illegal activities here in the province," Baricuatro added.
Impact on Crime Rates and Ongoing Security Measures
The governor highlighted that these crackdowns have contributed to a significant reduction in crime, with the province reportedly 47 percent safer annually over the past seven months due to lockdowns and enforcement actions. Meanwhile, authorities are actively investigating the threats, with police increasing personnel at the Capitol to ensure her safety.
Baricuatro emphasized that the threats have not affected her emotionally or mentally. "Not at all. Look at me. But I look better than that. So, I really don't want this to get in the way. Ang ako lang is trabaho, if it's time to go, it's time to go. You know, I have to serve the people and I have to go on serving the people, regardless of how many deaths there is..." she stated, reaffirming her dedication to her duties.
