Cebu Man Arrested in Drug Bust, Denies Viral Robbery Allegations at SRP
Members of the Abellana Police Station 2 have filed charges against one of two men apprehended by security personnel at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City last week, following a complaint from an individual. This action comes after the suspect was caught in a buy-bust operation with a suspected shabu package valued at P6,000.
Details of the Arrest and Drug Charges
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 9, 2026, along F. Ramos Street in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Cebu City. The suspect has been identified as Jhesim Olarte Ortega, a 27-year-old resident of Sityo Silangan, Barangay Tejero, Cebu City. Authorities are preparing to file a case for violation of Section 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, against Ortega at the Abellana Police Station.
Viral Social Media Accusations and Ortega's Defense
Ortega and his companion went viral on social media after their arrest last week, with suspicions arising that they were involved in robbery activities at SRP. However, Ortega has strongly denied these allegations, providing an alternative account of the events. He explained that at the time, they were returning from playing billiards at a friend's place when they encountered patrolling SRP security personnel.
According to Ortega, his companion approached a man to ask for water, but the individual became suspicious, fearing a robbery attempt, which led to their apprehension. He emphasized that they were released shortly afterward once the misunderstanding was resolved. Ortega attributed the confusion to his companion's appearance, stating, "My friend just looks like a robber, that's why we were suspected of planning a robbery at SRP."
He further recounted, "We were on our way home after playing billiards when we met the SRP patrol. My companion approached that man to ask for water, and that guy thought he looked like a robber, so I got caught up in it." This statement highlights the role of perceived identity in the incident.
Legal and Social Implications
The case underscores the challenges of law enforcement in urban areas like Cebu City, where drug-related operations intersect with public safety concerns. The viral spread of the robbery accusations on social media adds a layer of public scrutiny, potentially impacting Ortega's reputation even as he faces formal drug charges. Authorities are proceeding with the drug case while the robbery suspicions appear to have been based on a misunderstanding.
This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread online and the importance of due process in legal matters. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the drug charges, with Ortega maintaining his innocence regarding the robbery claims.
