Philippine Government Acts Fast to Dispel Lockdown Hoaxes

On Friday, April 3, 2026, Malacañang and the Department of Health (DOH) took immediate action to quash viral social media rumors suggesting the Philippines is facing new lockdowns. Officials firmly stated that stories about an "energy lockdown" and a novel Covid-19 variant are entirely baseless, urging the public to rely on verified information.

Clarifying the "Energy Lockdown" Misinformation

The Palace addressed a widely circulated post claiming an "energy lockdown" would commence on April 20, advising people to stockpile essentials like food, water, medicines, and power equipment such as solar panels and rechargeable fans. "Fake news ito (That is fake news)," emphasized Palace Press Officer Claire Castro in a text message to reporters.

While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a one-year state of national energy emergency, this measure aims to stabilize the energy sector and tackle global fuel disruptions—not to impose a lockdown. To support citizens, the government is expanding fuel subsidies for the transport sector starting Monday, April 6, 2026.

Ensuring Stable Fuel Supply Amid Global Tensions

Behind the scenes, the government is working diligently to maintain electricity and fuel availability despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that Iran has agreed to permit safe passage for Philippine-flagged vessels and energy sources through the Strait of Hormuz.

This agreement was finalized during a phone call on Thursday, April 2, 2026, between Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, securing the nation's energy flow and preventing potential disruptions.

DOH Denies "Cicada Variant" Lockdown Claims

The DOH also intervened to debunk rumors about a supposed "BA.3.2" or "Cicada" variant of Covid-19, which falsely suggested it was spreading in the US and would trigger emergency lockdowns reminiscent of 2020. "The Department of Health emphasizes that there is no truth in the news circulating about an emergency lockdown in the country due to the Covid-19 Cicada Variant," the agency stated.

Health officials clarified that the Philippines remains safe from this variant, assuring the public there is no cause for concern and reinforcing that the country does not need to revert to past strict lockdown measures.

Public Urged to Combat Misinformation

Both the DOH and Malacañang are calling on the public to exercise caution when consuming and sharing information online. To avoid falling prey to fake news, officials recommend checking the official DOH Facebook page or following legitimate news platforms for verified updates.

Moving forward, the government's focus remains on keeping the economy operational and ensuring a stable energy supply, highlighting a commitment to transparency and public safety in these challenging times.
