In a decisive move to safeguard consumers, the Mandaue City Council has approved a new resolution aimed at combating unfair fuel pricing practices. This action comes in response to widespread complaints from residents about inconsistent prices at local gas stations, prompting officials to take a firm stand against potential exploitation.
Resolution 380-2026: A Call for Immediate Action
Led by Councilor Jun Arcilla Jr. and Barangay President Dante Borbajo, Resolution 380-2026 mandates strict monitoring of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and gasoline sellers across Mandaue City. The resolution directs the Mandaue City Police and the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) to conduct thorough inspections of fuel prices and distribution methods. This initiative is designed to ensure that businesses adhere to regulations and do not engage in deceptive practices that harm consumers.
Addressing Illegal Practices in the Fuel Market
Councilor Arcilla highlighted that while global fuel prices are rising due to tensions in the Middle East, the City must prevent local sellers from exacerbating the situation. Officials are specifically targeting two illegal activities: hoarding, where sellers conceal supplies to sell later at higher prices, and price manipulation, which involves selling older stock at inflated rates for unfair profits. "Our goal is to monitor the situation closely so that we can immediately address the concerns of our constituents," Arcilla stated, emphasizing the commitment to transparency.
Enhanced Inspections and Enforcement Measures
Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano confirmed that the City is collaborating with the Department of Energy to track costs effectively. Inspections will extend beyond gas stations to include large warehouses where fuel is stored, ensuring comprehensive oversight. The mayor warned that some businesses might attempt to delay stock releases in anticipation of price hikes. To counteract this, the BPLO has been empowered to impose penalties on any business found violating the law, reinforcing the City's dedication to fair market practices.
Protecting Mandauehanons from Unfair Charges
This monitoring effort is part of a broader strategy to maintain a transparent and equitable local fuel market. By remaining vigilant, city officials aim to shield Mandauehanons from overpaying for essential items like cooking gas and fuel. The City reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that global challenges do not lead to local abuse, thereby fostering a fair economic environment for all residents.
