President Marcos Inspects Upgraded Visayas Disaster Resource Center to Accelerate Disaster Relief

On February 26, 2026, President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. personally visited the upgraded Visayas Disaster Resource Center (VDRC) in Mandaue City. This initiative aims to significantly expedite the delivery of aid to communities in the Visayas and Mindanao regions affected by disasters.

Enhanced Production Capabilities with New Technology

The facility now features five Mechanized Production Systems (MPS), which are automatic vacuum packaging units. Thanks to this advanced technology, the center can produce 30,000 family food packs (FFPs) per eight-hour shift—a threefold increase in speed compared to its previous capacity.

Beyond speed, the vacuum system ensures that the food remains protected from spoilage. It helps prevent infestation by insects and allows for long-term storage, making it ideal for areas frequently hit by tragedies.

Government Commitment to Improved Disaster Response

President Marcos emphasized the significance of this upgrade in a statement: This is the first time the national government is providing this kind of food pack. In the past, victims had to source aid from various places. But now, the national government can provide. That's why this facility has become a valuable asset for us.

He revealed that currently, the VDRC maintains a reserve of 4 million food packs, ready for distribution to regions impacted by typhoons, floods, or even volcanic eruptions. Production at the facility continues until it reaches its maximum capacity of 5 million food packs.

Investment and Broader Support Programs

The upgrade, completed in July 2025, cost over P117 million through the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund. This aligns with the President's directive to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for prompt public service.

In addition to food provision, the VDRC supports other critical programs, including:

  • Emergency Cash Transfer
  • Cash-for-Work initiatives for low-income individuals

This comprehensive approach underscores the government's commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness and response efforts across vulnerable communities.
