Mayor's Nephew Fatally Ambushed in Maguindanao del Sur, Two Others Wounded
In a tragic incident on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Datu Murshid Ampatuan, the nephew of Shariff Aguak Mayor Datu Adatu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan Sr., was killed in an ambush in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur. The attack occurred at approximately 11:00 AM near the border of Barangay Kabengi and Barangay Salbu, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Details of the Ambush and Victims
The victim, Datu Murshid Ampatuan, was traveling in a black Nissan Livina with two companions: his uncle, Datu Yasser, who is the younger brother of Mayor Ampatuan, and a friend identified as Lemon Angkad Bangen. According to initial reports, armed men opened fire on their vehicle, unleashing a barrage of bullets that struck the car and its occupants.
Emergency responders swiftly transported the victims to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel declared Datu Murshid Ampatuan dead upon arrival. The two other individuals, Datu Yasser and Lemon Angkad Bangen, sustained non-life-threatening body injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The quick response by authorities helped prevent further casualties, but the loss of life has left the area in mourning.
Police Investigation and Possible Motives
During a press conference held on Wednesday, February 18, Philippine National Police (PNP) Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño provided insights into the ongoing investigation. He suggested that this ambush is likely connected to a previous attack targeting Mayor Ampatuan on January 25, 2026. In that earlier incident, assailants used rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles to ambush the mayor's convoy in Shariff Aguak.
Mayor Ampatuan survived the January attack unscathed, although two of his security escorts were injured. Brig. Gen. Tuaño stated, "Based on the initial investigation, when the three suspects descended during the ambush, it is possible that they were recognized by his brother (Datu Yasser)." This statement hints at a potential identification of the perpetrators, which could aid in the pursuit of justice.
The police are actively exploring all angles, including political rivalries and local conflicts, as they work to apprehend those responsible. The recurrence of such violent acts in the region underscores ongoing security challenges that authorities must address to ensure public safety.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This ambush highlights the persistent issue of political violence in certain areas of the Philippines, particularly in regions like Maguindanao del Sur. The targeting of a mayor's relative raises concerns about the safety of public officials and their families, potentially impacting governance and community trust.
Local residents have expressed fear and anxiety following the attack, calling for increased police presence and stricter security measures. Community leaders are urging for a thorough and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent future incidents.
As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to arrests. The PNP has assured that they are dedicating significant resources to this case, emphasizing their commitment to resolving it swiftly and ensuring accountability for this heinous crime.
