The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has issued a stern warning to public utility vehicle (PUV) operators ahead of the upcoming Semana Santa, emphasizing strict enforcement of film rating policies. In a recently released memorandum, the agency has mandated that only content classified as G (General Patronage) or PG (Parental Guidance) may be displayed on buses, passenger ships, and other common carriers during this peak travel period.
Strict Penalties for Non-Compliance
MTRCB chairperson Lala Sotto clarified that operators found violating this directive will face severe penalties, including suspension or cancellation of their permits. This move is part of a broader initiative to safeguard commuters, particularly minors, from exposure to inappropriate material. Sotto explained that G-rated content is suitable for all audiences, while PG-rated material requires parental guidance due to certain scenes that may not be appropriate for young viewers.
On-Ground Monitoring and Inspections
To ensure rigorous implementation, the MTRCB has deployed its monitoring and inspection unit to conduct on-ground checks across various transportation hubs. This proactive approach aims to deter violations and promote responsible viewing practices among operators. The agency's efforts are integrated into its larger campaign, known as Responsableng Panonood, which focuses on fostering a safe and family-friendly entertainment environment.
The timing of this crackdown coincides with the expected surge in travelers during Semana Santa, when many families and individuals rely on PUVs for transportation. By enforcing these ratings, the MTRCB seeks to create a more secure and appropriate atmosphere for all passengers, aligning with public safety and ethical broadcasting standards. Operators are urged to comply promptly to avoid disruptions and legal repercussions during this busy season.
