Major Smuggling Bust in Negros: P25 Million in Illicit Cigarettes Seized

In a significant intelligence-driven operation, the Police Regional Office in Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) successfully confiscated an estimated P25 million worth of smuggled cigarettes on Monday, April 13, 2026. The raid took place in Barangay To-oy, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, marking a substantial blow to illegal trade activities in the area.

Operation Details and Arrest

The operation was initiated following a tip from a confidential informant regarding the suspected unloading of contraband cigarette boxes from a ten-wheeler wing van. Acting swiftly, operatives from the Regional Intelligence Division, PRO-NIR, coordinated with the Provincial Intelligence Unit of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, Himamaylan City Police Station, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue to conduct surveillance and validation.

During the surveillance, authorities caught the suspects in the act of unloading the illicit goods, leading to the immediate interception of the vehicle. The operation resulted in the arrest of a 43-year-old truck driver, known by the alias "Geo," who is a resident of Barangay Masulog, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

Recovered Contraband and Legal Violations

Recovered from the scene were 500 master cases of cigarettes, which were found to bear unauthorized tax seals and lacked the required graphic health warning labels. This discovery highlights clear violations of existing laws and regulations governing tobacco products, underscoring the risks such contraband poses to public health and government revenue.

Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-NIR Public Information Office chief, emphasized that the operation's success was due to meticulous planning and rapid execution, ensuring the contraband was intercepted before it could enter the market.

Leadership Commendation and Future Commitments

Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR director, commended the operating units for their swift, decisive, and coordinated action. He stressed that this operation reflects the organization's unwavering resolve against smuggling and illicit trade, showcasing the strength of intelligence-driven policing.

Ibay stated, "This major accomplishment highlights PRO-NIR's relentless and uncompromising stance against smuggling and illicit economic activities that undermine government revenue, threaten public health, and disrupt lawful commerce." He added that PRO-NIR will continue to intensify operations, leveraging strong collaboration with partner agencies to combat organized illegal trade effectively.

The suspect is currently detained at the Regional Intelligence Division, PRO-NIR, for proper legal disposition, as authorities send a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated in the Negros Island Region.
