PNP Weighs Legal Action Against Vlogger Over Unauthorized Police Uniform Use

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is currently examining the potential filing of criminal charges against a social media vlogger who publicly posted a photograph of himself donning the PNP's ceremonial blue police uniform. This act constitutes a clear breach of the law governing the illegal use of uniforms or insignia, according to official statements.

Potential Charges and Legal Framework

During a press briefing held at Camp Crame on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, chief of the PNP Public Information Office, disclosed that the vlogger could face charges under Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code. This statute penalizes the unauthorized wearing of a PNP uniform or insignia with imprisonment of up to six months. General Tuaño emphasized that police authorities are actively tracing the origin of the uniform to determine how the vlogger acquired it.

Furthermore, under Executive Order 297, businesses involved in the manufacture or sale of police uniforms without proper authorization may confront severe consequences, including closure, product confiscation, license cancellation, and substantial fines. This underscores the strict regulatory environment surrounding police attire.

Official Statements and Public Safety Concerns

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. reiterated that such actions are unequivocal violations of the law that risk misleading the public. He stressed that impersonating law enforcement personnel, even for entertainment or social media purposes, carries serious legal repercussions. "We are taking this matter seriously. We are now conducting an investigation to determine accountability and to send a message that there are consequences for the unauthorized use of police uniforms," Nartatez stated.

General Nartatez also highlighted concerns regarding the role of modern technology in facilitating misinformation. "We are aware that in today’s digital age, AI technology can be misused to create misleading images or videos, including ones that could impersonate police officers. We urge everyone to verify content before sharing because disinformation undermines public trust and safety," he added, pointing to the broader implications of digital content manipulation.

Symbolism and Respect for Authority

The PNP chief further reminded the public of the sanctity of the PNP insignia, emphasizing that the uniform symbolizes the authority of the state and the sacrifices made by officers. "The police uniform is a symbol of public service and authority. This must never be used for social media content or publicity stunts. Respect for the uniform is respect for the law," Nartatez concluded, reinforcing the importance of upholding the dignity associated with law enforcement attire.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the legal boundaries surrounding the use of official uniforms and the potential consequences for violations, particularly in an era where digital content can rapidly influence public perception.
