The Philippine National Police (PNP) is projecting a significant decrease in both road traffic accidents and drowning incidents for the upcoming 2026 Holy Week compared to the previous year. This optimistic forecast is primarily attributed to an expected reduction in travel volume, driven by soaring oil prices resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Comparative Data Highlights Alarming Trends
Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, the PNP spokesperson, provided stark comparative figures. In 2025, fatalities due to reckless imprudence surged to 919 individuals, a sharp increase from just over 800 recorded in 2024. Similarly, data from the PNP Maritime Group indicates a concerning rise in drowning incidents, with 151 cases reported last year compared to only 90 in 2024.
Economic Factors Curbing Traditional Exodus
General Tuaño emphasized that a noticeable decline in outbound travel from Metro Manila is already evident. Several transportation companies have reportedly suspended operations temporarily due to the prohibitively high fuel costs. This economic pressure is anticipated to naturally limit the number of vehicles on the road and people traveling to coastal or recreational areas during the Semana Santa exodus.
Heightened Police Preparedness and Vigilance
Despite the projected decrease in incidents, the PNP has assured the public that security and safety measures will remain at their highest level. The police force will maintain an elevated alert status throughout the holiday period. This includes the strategic deployment of sufficient manpower across various regions and key locations to monitor and respond to any emergencies.
The comprehensive plan involves continuous vigilance over both road safety and maritime activities to prevent accidents and drowning cases. Authorities are committed to ensuring public safety even with the anticipated lower traveler turnout, underscoring that preparedness is not being scaled back despite the favorable forecast.
