A tragic incident occurred in Barangay 7, Tuburan City, on Wednesday evening, February 25, 2026, when a construction worker lost his life after being struck by a falling palm tree. The victim, identified as Eric Buayaban Asingua, 48, was declared dead on arrival by medical personnel following the accident, which took place at approximately 6:40 PM.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to Police Major Joffre Grande, chief of the Tuburan Police Station, the old and dead palm tree suddenly collapsed without warning. The tree, estimated to be between 10 to 15 meters tall, fell directly onto the victim, who was seated on the terrace in front of his home at the time. Asingua was reportedly using his mobile phone during the incident.
Eyewitness Account from the Victim's Wife
Emily, 40, the victim's wife, recounted hearing a loud crashing sound from their roof while she was busy with household chores. She rushed outside to investigate, only to discover her husband pinned under the heavy trunk of the palm tree. In a state of shock, she immediately called for help from relatives and neighbors in an attempt to rescue him.
Despite being quickly transported to a nearby medical facility, Asingua was pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities noted that the impact also damaged the victim's motorcycle, which was caught in the collapse.

In a fortunate turn of events, the couple's 5-year-old daughter, who was nearby at the time of the accident, escaped unharmed. Police Major Grande emphasized the sudden and dangerous nature of the event, stating, "That palm tree near their home was very old. It was a terrible accident, happening abruptly as the tree fell directly, crushing the victim."
