Senator Zubiri Pays Tribute to Former Speaker Joe de Venecia

In a heartfelt statement, Senator Migz Zubiri has expressed profound sadness over the passing of former Speaker Jose "Joe" de Venecia Jr., extending his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the esteemed political figure.

A Mentor and Political Idol

Zubiri revealed that de Venecia, popularly known as JDV, was one of his political idols. He had the privilege of serving under de Venecia as Secretary General of Lakas-CMD when de Venecia was national president. Additionally, Zubiri was a key leader in de Venecia's group during the 12th and 13th Congresses in the House of Representatives.

"From him, I truly learned how to be a consensus builder," Zubiri stated. "My leadership style is largely influenced by him. I gained much from his brand of consultative leadership, his approach of listening first before deciding, and then finding a path that benefits everyone."

International Recognition and Diplomacy

De Venecia was highly regarded in the international community for always prioritizing the Philippines' name and standing. He earned deep admiration in organizations such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, as well as across other parliamentary networks abroad. His rare gift for building consensus among leaders and governments from different countries set him apart.

Zubiri remarked, "In truth, he would have made a great UN secretary-general because of his leadership traits and his kind of international diplomacy."

A Lasting Legacy

In August 2024, Zubiri had the honor of spearheading de Venecia's recognition in the Senate, citing his leadership as a model for his own career. Today, Zubiri mourns not just a former Speaker, but a great mentor who helped shape his path in public service.

"As we say goodbye, I carry with me the lessons he quietly taught by example, and I offer my prayers for the eternal repose of his soul," Zubiri said. "Rest in peace, former Speaker Jose 'Joe' de Venecia Jr. Your legacy lives on in the leaders you helped inspire and in the country you always tried to unite."
