Caloocan Representative Edgar Erice announced he will not participate in the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte on the plenary floor, stating that the process is being used for political purposes and that the House lacks moral ascendancy.
Erice criticizes selective use of Constitution
According to Erice, lawmakers appear to selectively invoke the Constitution only when it benefits them, while failing to fulfill its mandate to enact an anti-political dynasty law. He emphasized that the impeachment is not a “principled process” but rather a clash among former political allies that has devolved into a power struggle.
Refusal to join 'political spectacle'
The congressman added that he refuses to be part of what he called a “political spectacle” that does not help the public. He said the issue has not been discussed with his colleagues in the Liberal Party, but stressed that a “conscience vote” is allowed within their ranks.
Evidence insufficient, says Erice
Regarding the evidence presented during the impeachment hearings, Erice noted that the Commission on Audit's notice of disallowance is not yet final, and the Anti-Money Laundering Council's report is not conclusive. He argued that these are insufficient as a solid basis for impeachment.
